 Quetta Gladiators started their HBL PSL 9 campaign with a win by defeating Peshawar Zalmi by 16 points in a hard-fought and high-scoring match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday afternoon. The second match of the day will be played between Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 7 p.m.

Saim Ayub and Babar Azam gave Peshawar Zalmi a solid start with a combined score of 207. Saim struck out Akeyar Hossain in two overs in Zalmi's first six innings. In the next over, Babar Mohammad Amir hit a brilliant straight drive. Mohammad Hasnain was picked up by Saim with the fourth first ball of the sixth over. Babar showed his authority by hitting two spectacular sixes against Mohammad Wasim Jr in the fifth over. The two scored 70 points on the power play.

The 91-run opening partnership ended when Rossu overtook Syme (42, 26b, 2x4s, 3x6s). Hossain dismissed Mohammad Haris (7, 6b, 1x4) in the 11th over. Tom Kohler-Cadmore (18, 18b, 1x6) and Babar formed a 39-run third-wicket partnership, with Babar falling to Abrar Ahmed on the first ball of number 16, scoring 68 off 42 balls with four boundaries. , recording the same number as Maxima achieved. Babar also became the first batsman in HBL PSL history to reach 3000 runs. Two balls later, Abler struck again to dismiss KΓΆhler-Cadmore and leave Zalmi at 150-4. Dan Mousley joined Rovman Powell in the middle and needed 57 runs off 26 balls. On the last ball of the 17th over, Moosree succeeded in forcing Mohammad Amir to hit the much-awaited maximum over the deep square at the back. Amir returned in the 19th over, dismissed the dangerous Powell and made a cameo of 17 off nine balls to put Zalmi in trouble. He bowled the penultimate for just six runs. Zalmi needed 25 runs in the final over but Wasim Jr conceded just 8 runs while keeping Mausley out.

Abrar returned to competitive cricket after injury and gave away 29 runs with tough pitching, taking two valuable scalps. Amir, Hossain and Hasnain bagged one wicket each. Earlier, Quetta Gladiators got off to a bright start after being sent to bat by Peshawar Zalmi. HBL-PSL Saud Shakeel, making his debut, came out in full force accompanied by his experienced Jason Roy. Saud hit the first ball of the match towards mid-wicket for a four, setting a positive tone for the innings. The duo collected 18 runs in the first over of Aamir Jamal's tenure, completing a 50-run opening partnership in 4.4 overs. At the end of the powerplay, Quetta reached 70 points without any loss. At half-time, Saud and Roy put on a hundred-run partnership. Roy reached his fifty in the 11th over of 29 balls after hitting Moozley over deep midwicket in the maximum over.

He also achieved his 1000 runs in HBL-PSL career. Saud followed suit and scored his first HBL PSL score with 50 off 36 balls in the next over. The duo lost control in the 14th over as they took 20 off the bowling of Saim, with Saud hitting two sixes and Roy chipping in to hit the biggest shot over the bowler's head. Zalmi were given the lead by Luke Wood in the 16th innings, Saud (74, 47b, 6x4s, 4x6s) advanced to mid-on and Babar made a superb running catch. Roy and Saud's opening stand of 157 is the third highest partnership for a wicket in HBL PSL and the highest for Quetta Gladiators. Skipper Riley Rossu, who came in to bat at number three, delivered six overs at midwicket. One pitch later, he was foredown. Rossu (14, 7b, 1x4s, 1x6)'s stay at the crease was ended by the great Mohammad Zeeshan, also making his HBL-PSL debut, who hit a slow full-length ball into the stumps. 

Salman Irshad scored 75 off 48 balls with nine boundaries and two sixes before being caught at midwicket, ending Roy's innings. Salman claimed two more wickets in the last over of the innings, dismissing Sherfan Rutherford (20, 13b, 3x4s) and Mohammad Wasim Jr (4, 2b, 1x4s) within three balls. Quetta crossed the 200-run mark for the first time in this edition of the HBL PSL, posting 206-5 in 20 overs. For Peshawar, Salman returned with three scalps while Wood and Zeeshan grabbed a wicket each.
